1953 - Sinhala only act (100 Tamils killed in response to Tamil opposition in the parliament to the law)

 

1956 - FP takes up 'satyagraha' (non-violent protest) against Sinhala only act. Sinhala nationalist mob attacks.

 

1956 - Gal Oya riot in the East (150 Tamils died)

 

1958 - Anti-Tamil pogrom; lasted 5 days. 300 Tamils died

 

1970 - Tamil cultural related things from Tamilnadu were banned.

 

1972 - Ceylon is renamed to Sinhalese name of 'Sri Lanka'

 

1973 - Policy of standardisation; FP demands separate nation for Tamils

 

1976 - LTTE forms

 

1977 - Eelam Tamil overwhelmingly votes for a separate nation - Tamil Eelam

 

1977 - after the election, another state sponsored Anti-Tamil pogrom (3rd in 2 decades) 300 Tamils; 75000 refugees!!

 

1981 - burning of Jaffna Library

 

1983 - LTTE kills 13 policemen; start of 1st Eelam war

 

1983 - Black July (up to 4000 Tamils die in about 4 days)

 

1987 - Indian troops arrive

 

1990 - india recalls its troops; 2nd Eelam war

 

1995 - 3rd Eelam war

 

1997 - Kalutura Prison riot (3 Tamils massacred)

 

2002 - Ceasefire between LTTE & SL Government

 

May 2009 - more than 150,000 Tamils killed in weeks; LTTE defeated

 

2010 - Rajapaksha re-elected

 

2012 March - UNHRC adopts resolution against SL government

 

2013 March - UNHRC passes critical resolution against SL

 

2013 - TNA wins NPC
