Svære kampe brød torsdag ud mellem Sri Lanka’s hær (SLA) og Befrielsestigrene (LTTE) ved den sydlige grænse af Vaharai regionen i Batticaloa distrikt, da tropper fra Kajuwatte’s og Mankerni’s SLA-lejre indledte en landtroppe-bevægelse, støttet af tung mortér-, artilleri- og flerrørsraket-ild ind på LTTE-territorium kl. ca. 8.30. Den nye SLA-operation kommer, efter at den srilankanske talsmand for forsvaret, Keheliya Rambukwela’s udlægning onsdag af, at resultatet af et vigtigt møde mellem de internationale ledere ikke var så alvorligt, som Colombo havde frygtet.

LTTE’s militære talsmand, Irasiah Ilanthirayan sagde torsdag, at SLA’s angreb med tanks på den anden side af ingenmands-zonen inde på LTTE-territorium blev besvaret af Tigrene.


Detaljer om tabene kendes endnu ikke.


For to uger siden, d.8.november, blev 47 civile, de fleste af dem internt fordrevne kvinder og børn fra Trincomalee, dræbt, og over 100 civile blev såret ved et angreb med flerrørs-raketkastere og artilleri mod Kathiraveli og Vaharai.


Regionen er blokeret for humanitær adgang.


Tamilske parlamentarikere har anklaget det srilankanske militær for at bruge fødevarer som våben, udsultning af civile ved at indføre økonomisk blokade, blokere for humanitære organisationer og udføre angreb mod civile i en militær kampagne for at drive civile ud af den LTTE-kontrollerede region efter at have forårsaget en humanitær katastrofe.
