USA’s udenrigsminister, Condoleezza Rice, opfordrede indtrængende Sri Lanka’s udenrigsminister, Mangala Samaraweera, til at indgå i fælles bestræbelser på at planlægge fredsmøder sammen med de tamilske Tigre, citerede AFP mandag en fremtrædende USA repræsentant for at sige.Ved en samtale på sidelinien af FN’s generalforsamling gav fru Rice udtryk for kraftig støtte til de norsk ledede freds-bestræbelser i Sri Lanka.

‘Hun opfordrede indtrængende regeringen til at gå sammen med nordmændene i deres bestræbelser på at starte en ny runde af forhandlinger med LTTE,’ udtalte USA’s repræsentant under forudsætning af, at hans navn ikke kom frem.


Rice og Samaweera diskuterede også menneskerets-spørgsmål, og specielt massakren i sidste måned på 17 hjælpe-arbejdere fra den franske humanitære gruppe ‘Action Contre la Faim’, rapporterede AFP.


Den internationalt støttede ‘Sri Lanka’s Mægler Mission’ lægger ansvaret for drabene på de srilankanske sikkerhedsstyrker.


Rice fortalte Samaraweera, at hun var ‘opmuntret’ over regeringens beslutning om at lade internationale efterforskere gå med i en kulegravning af episoden.
