Oberstløjtnant Thileepan vækkede gennem sin selvopofrelse tamilernes
politiske bevidsthed


Det var juli 1987. Det indiske militær var lige ankommet til den euforiske velkomst fra det tamilske folk, der håbede, at inderne kom for at bringe den retfærdige fred, tamilerne længtes efter. Oberstløjtnant Thileepan, medlem af LTTE, som arbejdede for at få kvinder ind som medlemmer af LTTE, begyndte en faste til døden d.12.september 1987 samtidig med fremsættelsen af fem krav til den indiske regering, hvis militær var ankommet to måneder tidligere. De fem krav lyder:



  1. Løslad alle politiske fanger der er i fangenskab under den infame lov om ‘Forebyggelse af Terrorisme’;

  2. Stop for singhalesiske bosættelser i det tamilske hjemland og stop alt arbejde under påskud om genopbygning, indtil en midlertidig regerings-institution er oprettet;

  3. Stands  åbning af srilankanske politistationer i det tamilske hjemland;

  4. Afvæbn de illegale grupper, der er bevæbnet af det srilankanske militær;

  5. Fjern militær fra alle skoler.


  6. Allesammen rimelige krav at stille til en ‘Fredsbevarende Styrke’. Thileepan døde, uden at hans krav blev opfyldt, d. 26.september, 12 dage efter, han begyndte sin faste. Det tamilske folk samledes i hundred-tusindvis i 12 dage ved det historiske Nallur tempel i Jaffna, hvor Thileepan fastede. Disse 12 dage er blevet mindet af tamilere lige siden. De fleste af LTTE-medlemmerne faster d.26.september hvert år for at mindes oberstløjtnant Thileepan.


    I september 2001 havde LTTE erklæret en énsidig våbenhvile forud for underskrivelsen af 2002 våbenhvile-aftalen. D.26.september 2001 fastede et senior medlem af LTTE, oberst Sankar, sammen med andre medlemmer af LTTE til minde om Thileepan. Han blev dræbt den dag af en enhed fra en indtrængnings-styrke under det srilankanske militær i Mullaithivu. Derfor mindes man på denne dag to LTTE-martyrer.


    Gennem sin faste og sit ultimative offer lærte Thileepan det tamilske folk noget meget vigtigt. Han lærte dem de magtfuldes falske væsen, en lektie, som kun de, der kæmper for frihed, nogensinde vil lære.


    Den lektie styrkede den tamilske frihedskamp og har holdt den i live til denne dag
