Titusindvis af canadiske tamilere stimlede mandag sammen på Mel Lastman Plads i Toronto,  Canada, og trodsede en pludselig transit-strejke i byen for at protestere mod de krænkelser af menneskeretten, der begås af Sri Lanka’s regering mod deres slægtninge i Nord og Øst. Demonstrationen i Toronto var den største af de demonstrationer verden over, der afholdtes samtidigt fra New Zealand til Canada. Den store plads blev overfyldt, og folk stod også i de tilstødende gader.

En pludselig strejke havde vanskeliggjort trafikken i Toronto, men de tamilske handlende lukkede deres butikker og arbejdede dagen igennem på at arrangere kørsel med busser, og de lokale tamilske medier spillede en fænomenal rolle ved at lave samkørsel med flere i hver bil, så folk kunne deltage i begivenheden uden problemer, forlød det.

Canadiske politikere og freds-aktivister deltog for at vise deres solidaritet med det tamilske samfund.

En opfordring blev sendt til det canadiske forbunds politiske partier, der anmodede Canada om at spille en aktiv og upartisk rolle i den srilankanske fredsproces og sortlistningen af LTTE.

Opfordringen bad endvidere Canadas regering om at få den srilankanske regering til at ophøre med drabene på tamilske civile og  øjeblikkeligt afvæbne, nedlægge og fjerne alle paramilitære grupper i Nord og Øst.

Opfordringen bad også den canadiske regering om at presse den srilankanske regering til at overholde våbenhvile-aftalen ved at forlade højsikkerheds-zoner, ophæve forbuddet mod fiske-aktiviteter samt den uretmæssige økonomiske embargo, der er blevet foranstaltet mod Nord og Øst. Hvis den srilankanske regering ikke opfylder dette, opfordrede skrivelsen Canadas regering til at indføre diplomatiske og økonomiske sanktioner mod den srilankanske regering. Tidligere på dagen deltog flere tusinde i en demonstration foran parlamentet i Canadas hovedstad, Ottawa
