Ensidig og uretfærdig ‘ således betegnede den Geneve-baserede Internationale Føderation af Tamilere (IFT), et konsortium på mere end 150 udenlandske tamilske organisationer, i en pressemeddelelse tirsdag, EU’s kritik af Befrielsestigrene, idet de opfordrede medlems-staterne af unionen til at afholde sig fra at foretage nogen yderligere ‘afstraffelses-handling’ mod Tamil Eelams Befrielses Tigre (LTTE) og bemærkede, at noget sådant vil bringe fredsprocessen i fare. 

‘Den Internationale Føderation af Tamilere (IFT) ønsker, på den Tamilske Diaspora’s vegne, at give udtryk for chok og forfærdelse over den ensidige EU erklæring om ‘Terrorisme i Sri Lanka’, udsendt d.26.09.05 med fordømmelse af LTTE. 

‘Beslutningen om ikke at modtage LTTE delegationer i nogen af EU medlemsstaterne fratager det tamilske folk og LTTE muligheden for at fremstille deres sag for EU landene. Den fratager dem også muligheden for  fortsat at få førstehånds-information om de demokratiske institutioner i Vesten,’ stod der i pressemeddelelsen.

‘Medlemsstater i EU gav tilflugtssteder og asyl til tamilere for to årtier siden, da de erkendte den fare, tamilerne var udsat for fra undertrykkende singhalesiske regeringer og yderliggående singhalesiske nationalister. IFT frygter, at den nylige EU erklæring igen vil vække fjendtlige følelser mod tamilerne.’  

Idet pressemeddelelsen pointerede, at begge parter i konflikten står anklaget for de politisk motiverede drab i Øst, udtalte den, at det var ‘unfair’ at anklage kun  LTTE, som er den ene af nøglepersonerne i fredsprocessen, for volden. 

‘IFT tror, at EU-erklæringen har forvoldt uoprettelig skade for fredsprocessen på et tidspunkt, da retorikken fra de yderliggående singhalesiske nationalister eskalerer i de sydlige dele af Sri Lanka,’ sagde meddelelsen. 

EU erklæringen giver moralsk støtte til de singhalesiske nationalister, som har tilsluttet sig præsident-kandidaten, Mahinda Rajapakses, opfordring til ophævelse af Våbenstilstands Aftalen (CFA) og aftalen om ‘Post-Tsunami Operationer og Ledelses Struktur’ (P-TOMS). 

‘På vegne af det tamilske folk beder IFT indtrængende hver medlemsstat i EU om at afholde sig fra at foretage nogen yderligere afstraffelseshandling mod LTTE, da det vil påvirke alle tamilere, både hjemme og i Europa og vil bringe fredsprocessen i fare. ‘IFT beder indtrængende om tålmodighed og forståelse,’ stod der i pressemeddelelsen.
