En soldat fra den srilankanske hær (SLA) er rapporteret dræbt og en anden såret, da Befrielsestigrene skød mod dem i den neutrale zone, efter at SLA-soldater var trængt mindst 150m ind over LTTE’s fremskudte forsvarslinie i området mellem det SLA-besatte Kilali, Jaffna og det LTTE-kontrollerede hovedområde kl. ca. 17 onsdag. Kvindelige LTTE-soldater i fremskudte forsvarslinie åbnede ild, da de opdagede, at SLA-soldater sigtede imod dem, udtalte kilder i Kilinochchi. En lignende episode fandt sted i samme område i februar 2003.

Den neutrale zone strækker sig 600 m mellem de to parters fremskudte forsvarslinier, og soldater fra begge sider har kun tilladelse til at bevæge sig højst 50 m fra deres egen forsvarslinie (FDL), ifølge ‘Våbenstilstands Aftalen’ (CFA)

LTTE-kilder sagde, at de to SLA-soldater havde bevæget sig mere end 450 m fra SLA’s forsvarslinie, da episoden fandt sted. De tilføjede, at SLA-soldaterne var på recognoscerings-mission og blev opdaget af de kvindelige soldater, der gjorde tjeneste ved Befrielsestigrenes forsvarslinie. LTTE-soldaterne åbnede ild, da den ene af SLA-soldaterne sigtede mod LTTE-forsvarsposten, forlød det.

Den soldat, der blev dræbt, var i besiddelse af en kikkert og en håndgranat. Den sårede soldat havde ifølge kilderne en riffel.

Befrielsestigrene overgav soldatens lig til SLA-officerer i den neutrale zone sent onsdag aften, under overvågning af medlemmer fra ‘Den Srilanske Mægler Mission’, udtalte kilder.

Kilder i Colombo sagde imidlertid, at generalløjtnant Shantha Kottegoda, Kommandør i den srilankanske hær, har beordret en afhøring angående episoden.
