Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), SriLankas magtfulde venstreorienterede singhalesiske parti, roste mandag det standpunkt, der er taget af den srilankanske hærs nordlige kommando i spørgsmålet om Høj sikkerhedszonerne  i Jaffna og anklagede premierminister Ranil Wickremesinghe for at samarbejde med L.T.T.E om at dele øen i overensstemmelse med en hemmelig pagt. JVP er det næststørste oppositions-parti i SriLankas parlament.


I en udtalelse på en pressekonference mandag i Colombos centrum påstod partiets propaganda-sekretær, Wimal Weerawanse, at premierministeren havde indgået en hemmelig pagt med L.T.T.E, medens han (som PM) var leder af oppositionen, og at han nu forsøger at nedlægge høj sikkerheds-zonerne (HSZ) i Jaffna ifølge denne hemmelige aftale.

Weerawanse påstod, at SriLankas norske ambassadør, Jon Westborg, blev fjernet fra sin post, fordi JVP, president Kumaratunga og det buddhistiske præsteskab protesterede imod hans indblanding i SriLankas interne forhold.

‘De srilankanske sikkerheds styrker indtog en stærk holdning i spørgsmålet om fjernelse af sikkerheds styrkerne (HSZ) i nord. Men vi er ikke sikre på, hvorvidt selv de kan bevare deres standpunkt, stående over for de aftaler, som den Den Forenede Nationale Front (UNF)’s regering muligvis vil indgå med L.T.T.E vedrørende dette spørgsmål under de igangværende fredsmøder’, sagde Weerawanse.

     ‘Premierminister Ranil Wickremesinghe forsøger at efterligne L.T.T.E lederens stil. Baggrunden for og iscenesættelsen af hans henvendelse til nationen søndag var udformet efter forbillede af L.T.T.E lederens tale på Store Heltedag i November’, tilføjede han.

Det, at PM følte det nødvendigt at henvende sig til nationen på dette tidspunkt, viste, at UNF regeringen står overfor en krise, ifølge JVP lederen. Han sagde, at UNF regeringen ikke havde gjort noget for befolkningen i sin et års regeringsperiode.

Pressekonferencen blev arrangeret for at meddele, at JVP’ernes Jana Bala’ (Folkets magt) -demonstration afholdes i Colombo onsdag som protest mod fredsmøderne, de stigende leveomkostninger og privatiseringen.

Weerawansa truede med, at der ville komme mange massemøder som Jana Bana i fremtiden, hvilket måske kunne føre til væltning af regeringen.

Det lykkedes ikke JVP at erobre regerings magten i 1971 og 1989 gennem blodige opstande. Tusinder af unge singhalesere blev dræbt, da srilankanske sikkerheds styrker brutalt undertrykte oprørerne.
