Hvor mange mennesker, det være sig lederne af de
internationale organisationer, der arbejder her i landet(Sri Lanka), diplomater,
singhalesere osv. er mon opmærksomme på den økonomiske blokade mod Vanni, der
langsomt og lydløst tager til. Private butiksejere hindres mod at bringe NOGEN SOM
HELST varer ind i Vanni, herunder almindelige fødevarer. Fødevarer i forhold til
befolkningstallet får kun tilladelse til at komme til Vanni, når det foregår
gennem regeringens repræsentant.

De forbudte varer omfatter bøger, skolematerialer,
legetøj, beklædning, fodtøj og alt andet. Elektroniske artikler, cykler,
motorcykler o.lgn. er alle forbudt. Reservedele til cykler, motorcykler og
transport-køretøjer er det også forbudt at indføre.

Forbud mod indførsel af benzin og gødning har været
ødelæggende for landbruget, Vanni-befolkningens hovederhverv. Brændstof-manglen
har begrænset elektricitets-forbruget, hvilket vanskeliggør operationer på
hospitalet, og muligheden for ventilation på hospitaler, kontorer og
skoler.

Manglen på cement har allerede standset de i forvejen
langsomt fremadskridende planer for genopførelse af huse, ødelagt af
tsunamien.

Er det så mærkeligt, at Vanni fremstår som et andet land
for folk, der kommer fra øens sydlige del.?

Burde besøgende fra syd ikke blive mere forbavsede, end
de er, over, at Vanni fungerer med bedre lov og orden end resten af øen til
trods for denne økonomiske blokade?
