I sin første henvendelse til parlamentet i Colombo afviste Sri Lanka’s præsident, Mahinda Rajapakse, fredag det tamilske krav om ret til selvbestemmelse og begrebet ‘traditionelt tamilsk hjemland’, undgik at komme ind på norsk mægling og gentog sit hårde standpunkt, der var skitseret i valgmanifestet, ‘Mahinda’s tanker’, udarbejdet efter hans aftale med de ekstreme singhalesiske nationalistpartier, JVP og JHU. Han ophævede P-TOMS aftalen og sagde, han ville erstatte den med tsunami genopbygnings-programmet, ‘Jaya Lanka’ (Sejr til Lanka). Hans ‘nye freds proces’ ville sigte imod at føre direkte samtaler med ‘Tamil Eelam’s Befrielses Tigre’ (LTTE), sagde han.

Rajapakse sagde:’ I stedet for traditionelle hjemlande og selvbestemmelse, der tillader en etnisk gruppe at bryde ud af ‘Den Srilankanske Republik’, vil der blive taget skridt til at sikre alle samfund, herunder singhalesere, tamilere, muslimer og malayer, frihed til at udøve alle de rettigheder, der er indeholdt i grundloven, herunder retten til at bo i alle dele af Sri Lanka, ud fra den betragtning, at hele territoriet er hjemland for alle grupper i samfundet.
